With very few exceptions, I start my writing process that same way. After months on the road and a fairly strict schedule for keeping up with my posts I’ve had to find a routine that works for me. I usually begin first thing in the morning, when I’m most motivated and focused. I find a great spot, settle in (usually with a drink of some sort), plug in my headphones and put on Aretha Franklin’s “That’s The Way I Feel About You.” I can’t say why, but it puts me in my writing mode. It inspirers me. Perhaps because of its complete and unselfserving honesty.
Whoever she’s singing this song about you can tell that she’s in control. She has a firm outlook on the situation and it hardly even seems to matter what he feels or what his response will be. She’s got something to say and nothing’s going to change that. What does she have to gain by being so transparent? Perhaps she has nothing to loose. That’s the way I hope to write. That’s the way I feel about it.
